Water in a cat fountain should stay clear and pleasant. If it becomes cloudy, develops persistent foam, leaves deposits or smells unusual, simply adding fresh water is not enough. Common causes include insufficient cleaning, a saturated filter, food residue, saliva and mineral deposits.
Why does fountain water become cloudy?
Water moves through the reservoir, pump, channels and filter. Hair, dust, crumbs, saliva and minerals can gradually accumulate. A very warm or sunny location can also mean the water needs refreshing more often. See where to place a cat fountain.
Cloudy water, foam or smell: what do they mean?
Slightly cloudy water
Check when the water was last fully changed and inspect the filter. Fine particles can affect clarity even when the fountain looks clean.
Persistent foam
A few bubbles caused by circulation are normal. Foam that remains may result from organic residue, a dirty filter or cleaning product that was not rinsed away thoroughly.
Unusual smell
Replace the water and clean the reservoir, recesses and pump before putting the fountain back into service.
Can the filter cause cloudy water?
Yes. A saturated filter becomes less effective and may also affect flow. Replacement timing depends on the model, water, number of pets and use. Read when to replace a filter and browse THYLY filters.
How to clean a fountain with cloudy water
- Switch off and disconnect the fountain.
- Empty all water.
- Remove washable parts and clean the reservoir, corners and channels.
- Inspect the pump. See our guide to cat fountain pump cleaning and troubleshooting.
- Rinse everything thoroughly, reassemble and refill with clean water.

How to stop the water becoming cloudy again
Refresh the water regularly instead of topping it up indefinitely. Read how often to change fountain water. Keep the fountain away from the litter tray and, where practical, away from areas with crumbs, dust and strong heat. With multiple pets or long-haired cats, inspect the pump inlet and water surface more often.
Do you need a new fountain?
Not necessarily. Cloudiness is more often a maintenance, filter, placement or water-quality issue. A fountain that is very difficult to dismantle can, however, make proper cleaning harder. Use our fountain buying guide or browse THYLY fountains.
When should you be particularly careful?
If your cat suddenly refuses the fountain, check the water, smell, pump sound and cleanliness. A major drop in drinking, vomiting, lethargy, urinary problems or other unusual symptoms should not automatically be blamed on the fountain; contact a veterinarian.
FAQ
Why does the water become cloudy quickly?
Hair, dust, saliva, food residue, a saturated filter, infrequent cleaning and warm conditions are common causes.
Are bubbles normal?
Small circulation bubbles can be normal; persistent foam deserves investigation.
Can I just add more water?
Not when the water is already cloudy or smells unusual. Empty, clean and refill.
Can limescale contribute?
Mineral-rich water can leave deposits that should be removed during maintenance.
